Abraham Lincoln Introduction The world will step aside for man who knows where he is going. With this quote of Abraham Lincoln would like to start my speech about him. He was one of the most famous presidents of the United States of America and the first, but not the last President who was assassinated. But lets start at the beginning: 1. His childhood Abraham Lincoln was born on the12th of February 1809 in Kentucky in small log cabin house, with just one room inside. He had brother and sister. The Lincolns were one of many poor farmers in this State. His parents were members of baptist church and strictly against slavery. At the age of 7, the family moved to Indiana, where two years later his mother Nancy died. His father married again and his stepmother, nice woman, made sure that he got the necessary education at home. According to Lincoln, he never visited public school for whole year. His father wanted him to become farmer, so he had to work on the fields of their neighbours farms. When he was 21, they moved to Illinois, where he again helped his father on the farm. But he didnt like it and left his family in 1831. 2. Family He went to New Salem and worked in general store. He continued his self-studies and liked politics so much, that he applied for the legislative Assembly in Illinois and later even became lawyer in Springfield. 1842 Lincoln married Mary Todd. She came from rich family, which still held slaves. They had four children, but three of them died when they were very young. 3. Lincolns political career For while he ignored his political career and instead was very good railroad lawyer. But in 1854 Lincoln became involved in politics again. In the southern part of USA people lived from slavery and in the north they didnt agree with it and wanted to abolish it. Lincoln as Yankee (this means „Nordstaatler) also didnt accept slavery and joined together with other Parties to the new Republican Party as opposition to the expansion of slavery. In 1856 he was the leader of this Party and their goal was to restrict the slavery to the southern parts. In 1858, he wanted to become senator, but the Republican Party even nominated him for the Presidential election of 1860. 4. Lincoln as President On the 6th of November 1860 Lincoln was elected for the 16th president of the USA. After Lincoln election, seven States (South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Louisiana) formed the Confederate States of America, which led to the American Civil War. In his whole period as President, he had to rebuild the Union with military force and many bloody battles. Lincoln was re- elected President in 1864. He was one of the most populare presidents of the United States of America because he saved the country from the self-destruction and freed it from slavery! 5. The Assassination– his death It happened on Good Friday (Karfreitag), the 14th of April 1865. Lincoln, his wife and some friends drove to the theatre. His body guard moved away for short time and nobody noticed the man, who crept up to Lincoln and shot him in the head. After being in coma for nine hours, Lincoln died at 7:22 next morning. few weeks later, his murder „Wilkes Booth was executed in Washington. 6.
