The past continuous Use: We use the past continuous to say that somebody was in the middle of doing something at certain time in the past. The action or situation had started before that time but it had not finished. Formation: verb to be in the past simple ing-form of main verb What were you doing at 5 oclock yesterday? was watching TV. Positive statements: Negative statements: Questions: Short form answers: was working yesterday. wasnt working yesterday. Were you working yesterday? Yes, was. No, wasnt. Time clauses with WHEN and WHILE We often use the past simple and the past continuous in the same sentence. The past continuous describes the longer action or situation and the past simple describes the shorter action or situation. was standing at the bus stop when somebody stole my bag. They were eating when they heard cry. While was standing at the bus stop, somebody stole my bag While they were eating, they heard cry.
