Time: 3 4 lessons NOTTING HILL Overview of the area 1 Notting Hill is an area in West London, in the borough (Bezirk) of Kensington and Chelsea. 2 Notting Hill is most well-known for Portobello Market (on Portobello Road, unsurprisingly), which runs every day except Sundays, and the Notting Hill carnival, held every year on the last weekend in August. 3 Of course, we couldnt talk about Notting Hill without mentioning (erwähnen) the film Notting Hill with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. It was released (erscheinen) in 1999 and did much to promote (für etwas werben) and raise (erhöhen) interest in the area. (source: 4 The late 1990s, after all (hier: nämlich), were still time when much of Notting Hill was undergoing change. People of higher social class moved there and so Notting Hill changed from being poor area to richer one. Nowadays much of the area is incredibly expensive in terms of (bezüglich, betreffend) house prices and rents (Miete) as well as rents for shopkeepers. Some of the unique soul (Seele) of the area has been lost. 5 Nevertheless (trotzdem), Notting Hill is still great place to visit, from its cafés and restaurants, its market and boutique shops, to its many pubs and bars. There is always something to do, whatever your interest be it shopping, dining, film, drinking, clubbing or more! History of Notting Hill 1 It quite hard to believe that London most fashionable area was described as a massive slum (Elendsviertel), full of multi-occupied houses, rats and rubbish only 40 years ago definitely no-go area. The area had always been known as the bad part of the borough of Kensington and Chelsea. 2 Two centuries (Jahrhundert) ago, there was pretty much nothing in Notting Hill. It was only (erst) in 1840 that the area became more residential (bewohnt). They built long rows of houses, where lot of people lived in. 3 After World War II the situation in the area got worse. It became slum. 4 After World War II lot of Afro-Caribbean people moved to Notting Hill. Fascist (faschistisch) groups wanted to keep Britain white and so more and more black people were attacked. In 1958 Britains first race riots (Krawalle, Ausschreitungen) broke out against the black community. 5 year later, in 1959, the Notting Hill Carnival was organized for the first time as an unofficial response to the riots. It was way of the Afro-Caribbean people to celebrate their own cultures and traditions. Taking place in hall at first the Notting Hill Carnival took to the streets in 1965 and has grown (wachsen) ever since. Every year around one million people come to the party which is now known as the worlds second biggest street festival (behind Rio). Although the carnival has seen some trouble in the past, it is relatively safe event now. Aside from carnival weekend, Notting Hill is rather quiet area for most of the year. The exception to this is Saturdays when Portobello Market is full of visitors walking through the antiques market. (source: Portobello Market (source: 1 London has many markets, but one of the best is this one! The world-famous Portobello Market on Portobello Road is absolutely unmissable (unbedingt sehenswert, nicht zu verfehlen) on your visit to Notting Hill. 2 The mile-long street market sells wide variety (Vielfalt) of goods (Ware), clothes, antiques (Antiquitäten) and even food, with different items (Produkte) being sold on different days. It is open every day, except for Sunday. 3 On weekdays, youll find wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables market, located between where Portobello Road crosses (kreuzen) Colville Terrace and Westbourne Park Road. 4 On Fridays and Saturdays there is funky selection (Auswahl) of clothes stalls (Stände), located under the Westway. Beyond that there are lot of stalls selling second-hand goods. 5 And of course, the market wouldnt be the market without the famous antiques market on Saturdays! The market on this day is by far the busiest (geschäftig, hektisch). If you dont mind (etwas dagegen haben) big crowds, youll be fine but if you do, be warned! 6 Whatever day you go on, youll find number of cafes, pubs and bars along Portobello Road and just off it, so there are lot of places to take rest (Pause machen) and eat or drink something during your visit to the market. Opening Hours Monday Wednesday: 8am 6.30pm Thursday: 8am 1pm Saturday: 8am 6.30pm (source: Getting to Notting Hill Notting Hill is very easily reached by Underground or bus from anywhere in London. If youre coming to the area by Underground (which is called tube in London), the best station to arrive at is Notting Hill Gate on the Central, Circle and District Lines. (source: Links BROCHURES One way that people learn about places, people, or things that they do not know is by reading about them. But what if they dont have time to read whole book or they just want quick overview of the subject? Businesses often use brochures to inform, educate, or persuade1 — quickly. They use brochure to grab the readers attention2 and get them interested enough to want to know more. Task overview The council3 of Notting Hill wants to attract new tourists to visit the place. Thats why theyve decided to have an advertising agency4 create persuasive5 brochure about the area. Create brochure about Notting Hill that informs and persuades. The brochure is not an in depth study6 of topic but it should give enough information to grab and keep the readers interest from start to finish. You are in competition with other advertising agencies. Just one of you can land the contract7 with the council of Notting Hill. May the best one win8. Checklist Formalities: 1 horizontal A4 page, folded in the middle. Orientation: Does the brochure give enough information that the reader knows where to find this place? (Map, directions) Content: Does the brochure tell what is significant about this place (historical importance, tourist attractions, famous residents, significant industries, etc.)? Pictures: Are there interesting pictures?
