One day Dallas visits them with his car and they go to buy some food in the village. After few hours, on their way back home, the boys see that the old church is on fire. Ponyboy feels guilty because he thinks that he has left burning cigarette in the church before and therefore the fire started. After that, Ponyboy and Johnny dont want to go home, because they are in trouble at home. When they are at the park, group of Socs drive by and get out of the car. So, they hop on the next train to the church. There they cut off their long greasy hair and bleach it that nobody cant recognize them again. To pass time, they smoke cigarettes and play poker. Randy visits Ponyboy and does not blame him for Bobs death. Ponyboy tells him that he was the one who killed Bob because he doesnt want Johnny to be seen as killer. When they hear screams from inside the church, Ponyboy and Johnny trap inside the building to rescue the children. All the kids got all out safely and Ponyboy is able to escape ( flüchten) but not so Johnny. burning roof beam ( Balken) falls on his back and he gets injured ( verletzt). Dallas, Ponyboy and Johnny have to go to hospital. Johnny is in critical condition. The story begins with Ponyboy, Jonny and Dallas sitting at the drivein theatre where they are flirting with two Soc girls, Sherri Cherry Valance and her friend Marcia. After the show, Ponyboy and Jonny are walking Cherry and Marcia home, when the girls boyfriends Bob and Randy catch up. Although they are very drunk, the girls go home with them. Ponyboy returns home to tell the rest of the gang that Johnny has died and all of them are shocked. During this time, Dallas robs ( ausrauben) shop and is on the run from the police. Dallas then puts and unloaded gun into the polices direction and then the police shot him. After Ponyboy can get out of the hospital, the Socs and the Greasers are going to have gang fight. Dallas breaks out of the hospital to fight too. When they won the fight, they run back to Johnny and tell him that they won the fight. Dallas tells Johnny that he is proud of him. Johnny said fighting aint no good and dies. They kick Johnny and try to drown ( ertränken) Ponyboy. Johnny wants to help Ponyboy and stabs Bob to death. As soon as Bob has been killed, the other Socs run away. Afterwards, Dallas tells Ponyboy and Johnny, they could go to the old church in Windrixville and hide ( sich verstecken) there.
