Die Liebe zur Musik entdeckte die Pastorentochter während eines Kirchenfestes, da ihr Onkel sie dazu brachte, im örtlichen Gospelchor mitzusingen. Später entdeckte Perry die Band Queen für sich und war sofort von der Stimme des Frontmannes Freddie Mercury begeistert: „Als ich zum ersten Mal die Stimme von Freddie Mercury hörte, war es, als ob sich der Himmel öffnet. Im Jahr 2001 erhielt Perry einen Vertrag mit dem Label Red Hill Records.
