The Giver 10c 2007 The Giver PRE-READING ACTIVITIES Activity 1 Define utopia. For 10 minutes, write your thoughts about what utopian society would be like. What are the rules or laws? What happens if someone breaks them? Include as many details as possible. The idea is to write for the full 10 minutes. Spelling, grammar, or perfect sentences are not expected. Just let your thoughts stream out onto the paper. You may use the back of this page if you need to. Activity 2 Watch film presenting some kind of utopian world, such as Matrix or 1984. Characterize the film and describe what you like or dislike about it. Activity 3 Design mind-map with helpful new word (about 30 word). THE GIVER DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Answer the following questions about the book. 1. Write set of standard apologies for 2 student transgressions found in this English class at Sycamore High School. (ch 1) 2. Discuss the idea of release. What are some of the reasons given for person being released from the community? What are the advantages and disadvantages to community that accepts such practice? 3. Discuss similarities between our society and the society in your novel. 4. How realistic is the novel? Could that society exist? Describe the role of pain and difficulty in our lives. 6. The Giver pictures community in which every person and his or her experience is precisely the same. The climate is controlled, and competition has been eliminated in favor of community in which everyone works only for the common good. What advantages might sameness have for community? Is this loss of diversity worthwhile? Explain. Analyze one of the important characters from the novel. Include the following: appearance, actions, ideas (what the character thinks), manner (how the character acts), reactions of others to the character, and how the character feels over the course of the novel. Do his feelings/ideas change during the novel? Would you like this character? Would you like to BE this character? Explain. 7. What point was the author making about utopian societies? Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to receive special training from an old man known as The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of true pain and pleasure of life. Now its time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back. As The Giver transfers the memories, Jonas discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world. This science fiction novel by 1994 Newbery Medal winner Lois Lowry captivated millions of readers. However, many people were frustrated with the ending as they were often left with unanswered questions Task When you are finished with your work your portfolio is going to comprise closer look at the novel. This is what you will have to hand in: The preparatory tasks (vocabulary mind map, answers to questions, definition of utopia, comment on film) comparison of different concepts of utopia writing assignment An interdisciplinary assignment Process Step One: Preparatory tasks By Monday 18th you have to have read the book and be able to understand the necessary vocabulary. There is vocab list to help you. By Friday 22nd you have to show all preparatory tasks and hand in the vocabulary mind map. On Monday 25th you ought do test your knowledge of the words of your mind map. Step Two: Define the Perfect Visit the four sites of Utopias. Use Venn Diagram to compare and contrast two of your choice. Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into dreamlike coma in the snow. Or perhaps Jonas does hear music and is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him. However, many people have been dissatisfied with the ending. Thing of different one. In this way he has kept in touch with her during the last ten years. After Jonas escape, he writes his final letter to her in which he talks to her about Jonas selection, his reaction to the memories, how he differs from and is similar to her, and what made him finally escape, Design discussion between The Giver and the Chief Elder: Before The Giver applies for release, the Chief Elder and The Giver have an argument about what has happened to the community after they decided on Sameness. Imagine what they might say concerning the original intention and actual results. Requirements for your text: Your text should be at least two paragraphs (one page). Structure your text! Your text should comprise interpretational thoughts. Pay attention to grammar and spelling. Step four: Interdisciplinary task Choose one of the tasks: Science and art: Learn about colors how they are perceived, primary colors, the color spectrum, color mixing. Make notes about your results. Art and history: Jonas was frustrated because he did not know his grandparents or anything about his true family. You will be building family tree to learn about your family. Interview your family to learn more about your family. Visit This site will provide you with many genealogy sites in the Web. Use these sites as reference in construction your family tree. Plant your tree to last lifetime (e.g.: draw it on posterboard; design it in Power point, leave gaps for photographs or brief story about each person.) Present poetry slam in connection with the novel as group. Each person of your group should have written at least 3 extensive poems or raps (to be handed in). Learn your poems by heart, rehears your poems and present it in class.
