Most visitors want to go to Manhattan, the center of New York City. There are four more districs that together with Manhattan make up New York City: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. In 1624 the first European immigrants came from the Netherlands. In 1626 they bought Manhattan from the Indians. They called the town New Amsterdam. In 1664, England took over the colony and gave new name: New York. The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. You can find plenty of tall buildings in New York. During the first half of the 20 th century, New York City was in skyscraper race. The Woolworth Building was the first New York City skyscraper and the worlds tallest (built in 1913, 241m). Soon after the Chrysler Building had opened (built in 1929, 319m), the Empire State Building was constructed (built in 1930, 381m). Before the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001, it was still one of the tallest buildings in the world (1973, 427m). The money trading center of the USA is in Wall Street. New York City is shoppers paradise. Many tourists like to go window-shopping to the famous department stores on Fifth Avenue. Central Park is the largest park in New York City and is known as the lungs of the city. There are many things to do in the park: you can jog, bike, rollerblade or picnic. The most famous museum in New York City and one of the most famous in the world is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can spend lot of time looking at the paintings, sculptures, furniture, silver and glass from different centuries. If you like dinosaurs and big movie screens you should visit the American Museum of Natural History. The museum is located next to Central Park and has lot of scientific collections. On huge movie screen you can watch films about the rainforest and underwater volcanoes. The best musicals and plays are near Broadway and Times Square.
