Family members pretend that it was huge hound who lives in the moor that killed him. When Sherlock Holmes gets involved, he sends Dr. Watson to investigate the murder. When he arrives, he gets to know the people living there and the people working for the Baskervilles. An escaped prisoner is the first person of interest. As it turns out, different family is living in that region as well. Dr. Watson has to report all that back to Sherlock, who is, as Dr. Watson thinks, back in London working on something very important. Together they find out interesting facts about the prisoner and the family living in Dartmoor as well. As they investigate it gets clear, that there actually is huge dog in the moor, but that dog belongs to the murderer of Sir Charles Baskerville. Reading Log Project: The Hound of the Baskervilles Introduction You are going to create your personal reading log. The reading log is divided into three parts: • Pre-reading exercises to solve before reading the book • While-reading exercises to solve during the lecture • Post-reading exercises to solve after reading the book Some exercises have next to them, which means that they are optional. You do not have to solve them. The symbol means that you do the exercise on your own. The symbol means that you complete the exercise as group. At the end of the reading log, you will find some empty pages. These are meant for you to write down your personal experiences made during the process of this reading log. Before you start reading the book, read through all the exercises. Pay Attention: Some tasks are based on specific chapters. Complete them while/after you read them. Aims ü You can talk about and share your own experiences with your colleagues. ü You read The Hound of the Baskersvilles and understand the storyline. ü You add 10 new words to your passive and active vocabulary. ü You figure out reading strategy which helps you to read successfully Time Schedule You will have 6 weeks to complete your reading log. There will be 1-2 lessons per week at your disposal to work on it. The rest has to be done at home. Attention: Keep in mind that there are some exercises that cannot be completed alone. At the end of the six weeks you will hand in your reading log. It will be graded by the criteria which you find at the end of the reading log. Pre-Reading Exercises Task 1: Mystic Places The story takes place in very mysterious place called Dartmoor. In this place, strange things seem to happen. Some people claim to have been to such mysterious places. What about you? Have you ever been to mysterious place? If yes, describe the place and draw little sketch of it in the box. Talk about the mysterious place you have been to and tell them how you felt or imagine how you would feel. Write down the places the others told you about on the following lines. Person 1:_ Person 2:_ Task 3: Book Cover Have look at the book cover and study the picture carefully. What do you think the story is going to be about? What kind of book could it be (genre)? Write down your thoughts (3-4 sentences). Write them down in the following table. Additionally, write down the sentence from the book and look up the word in either dictionary or in the Internet. Explain the word in English in the third column. Word Sentence Definition Explanation Task 4: Characters You will get to know the following characters. While reading the book, fill in the characters traits, connections to other characters and important events that they took part in. When you reach the end of the book, you should have completed this exercise. Choose one chapter of the book. Using computer, listen to the chapter. While listening, you can either read in the book or just listen to it. Write down three words of which you did not know how to pronounce. In the right column, write down how you pronounce the word correctly. In next step, practice the correct pronunciation. Task 6: Chapters 3-5 A) After reading the chapters 3-5, complete the following exercise. Put these events in chronological order – which event happened first? man in horse-drawn cab was watching Dr. Mortimer and Sir Henry. Dr. Mortimer met Sir Henry at Waterloo Station. Holmes, Watson, Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer had lunch together. Sir Charles began to run. Sir Charles was waiting for someone at the gate. Sir Henry discovered that someone had stolen an old boot. Sir Henry told Holmes that Sir Charles had left him million pounds. Someone sent Sir Henry note. The rain washed the footprints away. B) You are Sherlock Holmes. What do you know about these things? Write down the answer on the following lines. Task 7: Chapters 6-7 A) Listen/read chapters 6 and 7. Match name from column with the sentence endings in column to make true sentences. B) Write short summary about the two chapters. (80 words) Task 8: Chapter 9 Read the summary. There are few mistakes. Mark and correct them. Watson is writing to Sherlock Holmes. He tells Holmes that he has found out that Sir Henry is in love with Miss Stapleton and wants to get married. He tells Holmes about Sir Henrys meeting with Miss Stapleton, Mr. Stapletons rude behavior and that later, Stapleton went to the Hall and said he was sorry for being rude. He invited Sir Henry for lunch on Friday. Watson also tells Holmes about Barrymore. Sir Henry and Watson had decided to try to catch Barrymore signaling. They waited in the dining room, and at three oclock in the morning, they heard footsteps. They saw Barrymore at the end of the corridor and he was waving lamp in front of the window. They asked Barrymore who he was signaling to and he replied ‘No-one. Then Mrs. Barrymore explained that Selden, the murderer, was her nephew and he was outside, and that at night she took him food and clothes. Sir Henry and Watson decided to go and catch him. They put on their jackets and went out onto the moor. The moon wasnt shining that night, so it was very dark. Then Sir Henry and Watson heard large dog howling, but they werent afraid. They saw man and his light near rock. Then they heard the dog again, coming nearer. The man started running away from something he had seen. They ran after him. Then they heard scream. Sir Henry held his revolver while they walked forward carefully, until they saw man lying at the bottom of the Tor. The man was dead; he had fallen and broken his neck. Watson also saw mysterious, tall, muscular man standing at the top of the Tor, watching them. The tall man then disappeared. Post-Reading Exercises Task 9: Important Objects Choose two objects of the book that seem important to you. Why are they important? Here are some objects that you could use, but you can also choose some of your own. Write down the similarities and the differences between your predictions and the actual story line. Optional Task 11: Change of Perspective You are Sherlock Holmes. Before you arrived in Dartmoor, how did you experience the situation? Write journal entry from his perspective (about 150 words). Personal Journal As mentioned in the introduction, you are going to reflect on your own reading process and your experiences made while reading. This part will not be graded. Think about the following questions: § When did you read? (morning, afternoon, evening) à What worked best for you? § Where did you read? (in bed, at the table, in the bus, outside, etc.) à What worked best for you? § Describe your process of reading. § What strategy worked best for you? § Did you like the book? Why (not)? Variety of vocabulary in the texts. 0 Comment The book is an A2 level graded reader. We carry out this reading log with 7th grade, which has level A. Language wise the story is not too difficult. Therefore, the log has some exercises for the faster pupils that are not mandatory. We chose the topic of crime story because unsolved mysteries often get the readers to think who the person responsible for the crimes might be. Our goal is to support the readers autonomy by reading this book. Reading the story and doing the exercises they get to know their own reading strategy and hopefully find new passion for reading books. The fact that they read it mostly on their own should make them more selfconfident in reading and also pronouncing words.
