Animal Communication Communication is an adaptation that helps animals survive. Communication can be auditory, visual, tactile or chemical (tastes and smells!) Animals use communication to attract mates, warn off predators, mark territory and to identify themselves. Visual Communication There are two types of visual communication. Badges are the color and shape of the animal. They are structural adaptations. Displays are the second type of visual communication. They are the things animals do to communicate. Displays are behavioral adaptations. Auditory Communication Animals make lots of different sounds to communicate. From the roar of lion to the song of the whale, sound is way for animals to talk to other animals. Tactile Communication When cat rubs up against you or dog offers you its paw, they are communicating. Animals use touch in many different ways. Chemical Communication Have you ever smelled skunk? Seen cat rub the side of its mouth against something? These are both types of chemical communication. Tasks 1. Read trhough the text carefully. Note all words you dont understand in your exercise book and look them up in the dictionnary. Make your own vocabulary list into your exercise book. 2. For each type of communication you have some exemples. Give one extra example for all 4 categories 0f your own (gib je ein eigenes Beispiel an). Example: Butterflies have big, dark points on their wings, so that other animals, especially their enemies, are afraid of their look. 3. How do human beings communicate? Write into you exercise book, how people communicate. To help you, give you the different categories: Language Body language Facial expressions Explain all three types of communication. Do also list examples for each category. 4. Now we know, how animals communicate and how people do it. But what is about the communication between humans and animals? How can they communicate and understand each other? Choose 2 of the possibilities below and describe how people communicate with those animals.
