How to write comment I. Definition Comments are subjective form of argumentation. In comment we state our opinions and personal views on something. I. II. III. Functions of comment: • to give your own opinion on something • to weigh up the pros and cons of something Planning: • take five minutes to write down relevant ideas • do not collect too many as this will confuse you • decide on the position you want to take • find facts, examples etc. to support your opinion • put your ideas into logical order, e.g. number them • think about the opposite position and try to find arguments to reject it Writing 1. introduction • introduces the question • states importance of question states why question is interesting • says that there are different opinions on the matter and states your own position • announces the structure of the following argumentation 2. development • begins with the arguments that you are against and opposes them antithetically to those that you support • underlines your arguments with examples taken from your own experience (if possible) 3. Conclusion • restates your position clearly (if you cannot or do not want to take certain position, explain why) • presents one or two general sentences which accurately summarise the arguments you have cited in support of that position warns the reader of the possible consequence of not following your position and/or points out what can be gained from following that position
